Founded in 1981 by president and publisher Esther Margolis, Newmarket Press is one of the few mainstream, trade publishing houses in New York City under independent, entrepreneurial ownership. Newmarket publishes primarily in the areas of childcare and parenting, film and performing arts, psychology, health and nutrition, biography, history, business and personal finance, and popular self-help and reference.
Newmarket's list includes such popular and acclaimed books as the 2 million-copy bestselling What's Happening To My Body? series of puberty education books for boys and girls by Lynda Madaras. In addition, Newmarket has created a successful niche in publishing books on film, theatre and performing arts. Its entertainment list includes over 100 film books, tying in to 301 Oscar nominations, and 96 Oscar wins. Newmarket Press is especially noted for the illustrated moviebooks on such films as Superbad and Sense & Sensibility; and for its acclaimed Newmarket Shooting Script Series, including screenplay books on Juno and Michael Clayton.
